On the March 1st Jimmy Fallon show Prince tossed a borrowed 1961 Epiphone Crestwood into the air and let it crash onto the stage at the end of his performance. There simply isn’t any logical rationale for that. Smashing your own guitar is one thing…smashing a borrowed vintage guitar is another altogether.
The guitar was borrowed from Captain Kirk, a member of Fallon’s house band. The story goes Prince saw the guitar backstage and asked Captain Kirk if he could play it. Of course, Captain Kirk said yes. I am sure he completely regrets that decision now – especially since Prince refused to autograph it for him.
This guitar would have been worth between $2,500 and $4,000. By no means not the most expensive guitar…but that’s not the point. The point is Prince disrespected the owner of the guitar, the instrument, and the audience with his move.
Maybe he assumed that guitar was ruined forever after being played by him…so you might as well make it unplayable. I can think of quite a few more musicians I would rather smash my guitar. But…on second thought…none of them actually would smash it. Maybe that’s why I like them.
